Boston - The end of an adventure

On Friday It was also again very early going. While the women went shopping for Christmas (it was Black Friday, the biggest shopping day in the U.S.), men have we made our way to Boston, MA. After just one hour we arrived in a most ancient city in the United States of America, which could also be seen directly: Boston reminds me very much of Cologne and Bonn and Berlin. A town in the German style indicated. Alan and Peter both live in Boston. So it happened that these are today once again offered an exclusive individual programs. Actually, we did not make the classic city tour, like all other tourists. We could tackle more easily and make every now and then sometimes in a business Content (eg in glass "Apple Store" or "Nike Town").

Boston itself is very comparable to the English capital, London (at least from what I have heard about London, as added, I've never been in the United Kingdom). So it happened that the beautiful, sunny day, within ten minutes in a dense fog had turned damp and cold sea. Keeping time, we have finally found the restaurant where we had lunch before it started to rain in streams. After a good fifteen minutes, the rain was over but then left again and the sun rays do not reveal more of a storm.

afternoon then we have seen some interesting buildings, the State in the founding of America played an important role. Alan brought the very end and then to the port of Boston, one of the largest ports in the world.

After we all arrived at home, were all night again playing board games, until then the following morning after a late night again went to the home: 1000 miles in just under 13 hours.

Thanksgiving

After another five hours we are finally to large volume of traffic in Warwick, RI arrived. Mary and Terry, my "Guest aunts" were called around 18:00 clock we warmly welcome. After we had taken our beds in the basement (cellar), we fallowing the rest of the evening from our experiences in New York to tell. Alen and Peter came in the evening at that.

The next morning had to get up early because I had arranged with Ramona, who lives here in Rhode Iceland. It was the first time since early August that I had seen someone from my Ausstauschprogramm. Although we are all very closely in touch with the gigantic distances but it is very hard to take. Ramona and I fallowing unfortunately only a very short time, but we had sooo much to tell.

Back bei Mary und Terry, waren die Vorbereitungen fuer das grosse Thanksgiving Festmahl schon in vollem Gange. Gegen Mittag gab es dann traditionell Truthahn mit Kartoffelpueree und anderen Beilagen. Es war einfach herrlich...

Der Abend verging sehr schnell mit vielen Gesellschaftsspielen.

24 hours a navel of the world

Am Dienstag morgen um fuenf Uhr in North Canton, Ohio losgefahren, kamen wir dann endlich nach achteinhalb Stunden Autofahrt auf dem amerikanischen Highway und nur zwei kurzen Stopps um halb zwei in New York City, NY an. Dann dauerte es nocheinmal eine halbe Stunde (was fuer die Grossstadtverhaeltnisse ziehmlich schnell war), bis wir unser wunderbares Hotel am Timesquare im had found the heart of Manhattan.

"We" are the way, my host parents, Pam and Paul, and checked my Gastbrueder Chris and Pat at the hotel, we met Alan and Peter, two other family members who live in Boston, MA. Alan is aircraft pilot by profession and is therefore very much around in the world. So it was that he offered us a unique city tour through Manhattan. We started our little journey, at Times Square, then visited St. Patrick's Cathedral and made us finally to the "Top of the Rock", the highest buildings of Rockefeller Center. At the foot of the skyscraper was the famous skating ring, with the big Christmas tree. had from the viewing platform high above New York we have a wonderful view of Big Apple - would say as the New Yorker. We arrived just at the right time for one of the most beautiful sunsets to be seen. After dinner we strolled around the city then.

The next morning we went out again very early. I had my first night at the navel of the world behind me. After a aussgezeichneten breakfast (for the first time in five months, there were rolls and croissants: D), we took the New York subway to downtown Manhattan to Ground Zero, where seven years before the two were Zwillingstuerme of the World Trade Center. From there it was then not far to our ferry, which sailed to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Iceland over. After I then last of all in Seconds or postcards had found (except in world metropolises like New York City, there are here in America, namely no ...) we do we are on our journey to Rhode Iceland and the east coast of the United States.

have in the past 24 hours I experienced so much, that I first have to process everything. I drove about 1000 miles and have crossed half the U.S., only to come to the city of cities. This is one of the experiences to which I will remember still ...

Barack Obama was there - and I was there!

Today was the most exciting day of my far America being. Last night, called my Localcoordinatorin Dawn with my host mother (I was there, however, already in bed). So I only found out in the morning at breakfast, what would await me today: Barack Obama arrived today in my hometown. And now comes the Hammer: Dawn had received tickets for the Obama rally in my city Canton. I'm really excited me then made ready for school. Digital and video camera of course included. In English class I was then called out and picked up for the big event.

Once there, it was unexpectedly fast. The security check was done in two minutes, what has surprised me on the one hand, very precisely, after the death threats against Senator Barack Obama and the subsequent arrests of some Neo-Nazis in the last days.

When we found our seats in the back row, the hall was filled, more than. Everywhere you hear Obama screams: "YES WE CAN!", It echoed from the stands. After half an hour late then opens the curtain for me and the next president of the United States of America, the future most powerful person in the world came to thunderous applause on the stage.

His speech was impressive, though not new, since most had already said before. After all, the election next week ...

After his speech, and many, many photos and video recordings made Dawn us again on the way home. It was a great Tag (und ich wusste nichts davon...).

Spirit Week

Die Footballseasion hier in Ohio neigt sich dem Ende zu. Die regulaeren Spiele sind nun vorbei und fuer unser Team geht es jetzt in die Playoffs. Zuvor jedoch stand das groesste und wichtigste Spiel gegen unsere Rivalenschule "Jackson" vor der Tuer. Dafuer musste natuerlich der Schulspirit und Teamgeist erhoeht werden - und wie geht das besser als mit einer Spirit Week . Angefangen hat sie am Montag mit Collage Day . Die Schuelerinnen und Schueler waren aufgefordert Kleidung zu tragen, die sie mit ihrem zukuenftigen Collage verbinden wuerde. Am Dienstag ging es weiter mit Twin Day . Ueberall im Gebaeude sah man Jungen and girls with each An adjacent twin. Wed

ttwoch was Wacky Wednesday , probably any day of the week, which is comparable to our carnival. Bute costumes and other odd outfits were on the agenda. Thursday was the so-called Tie Dye Day . Colorful T-shirts could be seen today in the corridors and in classrooms. At night there was a large bonfire held at the school parking lot. This was heated up again right mood for the big game the next day.

Friday was Spirit Day of . Black and orange it was called today for all. The colors of our school.

the evening it was finally time. In the pouring rain and freezing cold Gina got me up at home and together we drove to the nearby town of Jackson. Even before we had found our seats in the sold out stadium, we were soaked to the skin and half frozen to death (The game had not even started yet).

When it finally went off and the mood anstiegt on and on, the pouring rain had still not aufgehoert. We had fun despite. Ah yes, the game we have, of course, how should it be otherwise won hands down. The rivals are beaten.

This post is for all the English speeking people visiting my blog, although my English is not the best, and I guess there will be many mistakes. :-)

I've heard from a lot of people that they found the link to this website, but they haven't understood anything it says. Basicly what this blog tells, are my experiences and impressions during my life here in the United States of America. I try to give the people in Germany an idea of how life is in the "land of opportunies". I report about my High School, the after school activities (mostly about soccer and American Football), but also about many other things like Homecoming or the trips with my family. The very first posts are telling about my preparation for this year and about my feelings right before I left my home country to start a new life.

For all people living in America it's just an everyday experiance, but for the people in Germany it might be very interesting to read. There are so many different thing, compared to Germany, specially in school, although the culture in general is very similar to Europe.

If you scroll down, there is thus a tool to translate the web page. I know it will not give you the best translation but at least an idea about the main topics.

It's time again - again to allow time for me to say.

Nearly two months have now passed already. This is incredible how fast I ran out of time. Again, the day has finally caught up with me now. Jeden morgen um 6:00 Uhr aufsstehen, frühstücken und dann geht's zum viertel vor sieben zur Schule. (0,5 Meilen - natürlich mit dem Auto) Dann heißt es warten, bis um 7:25 der Unterricht beginnt. Erste Stunde: Interactive Media. Mein Lehrer und gleichzeitiger Fußball coach lehrt uns hier die Kunst der Fotomontage und Bildverarbeitung. Zweite Schulstunde: Economics (oder auch Wirtschaftslehre). Ich bin froh dieses Fach gewählt zu haben, denn viele Probleme und Entscheidungen fürs spätere Leben werden hier gelöst bzw. beantwortet. Dann geht es weiter in meinem Schulalltag. Die dritte Stunde ist keine Unterrichtseinheit in dem Sinne, sondern eine so genannte Study Hall, in der ich selbstständig lernen und vor allem Homework can do whatever I greatly saves a lot of time at home. After that, I'm English. The first year of learning my fourth language. Because I Latin and French, some years before, had me this subject is extremely simple. So, the first four hours are done, now I have only a break and after that there's lunch.
After my lunch period we will drive in English. This is the only subject that gives me some trouble. This is because we read a very old English literature. However, I have better grades than most American students, which reassured me a bit. My penultimate school subject is precalculus (Math). Due to the excellent German education system - So here I realize that it is excellent - I find it hard not to repeat here the substance of the ninth grade.
Last but not least: U.S. History. Sounds boring but is very interesting!

But as I said - actually. The hook in the matter is the strict order that prevails in the classroom. For everything you need a so-called Hall Pass Port (an express permission to reside in the aisles). Compliance is a security Dienst und einem Police Officer überwacht. Jede noch so kleine Verspätung wird mich Nachsitzen geahndet. Zudem ist es nicht gestattet einen Schulranzen mitzubringen. Das heißt man trägt sämtliche Bücher, Hefte, Ordner, Schreibblöcke und -utensilien mit sich herum. Dies wird dadurch im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes erschwert, dass die Bücher mindestens 1200 Seiten - ja 1200 - dick sind.
Wie ihr seht. Mir geht's es außerordentlich gut hier!!!

Homecoming

Gestern war hier Homecoming , der erste "formal Dance" an meiner High School. Emily, Alina und ich trafen uns gegen halb sechs bei Emily zu Home and ordered pizza first, as all other restaurants were fully booked in the city.

Shortly after seven we went to school then. The two girls in evening dress and I in a suit and tie. Once there I was immediately welcomed by all right heartily. After a few video recordings I made from my camera then also with my jacket in the wardrobe. Now it could go go!

the stream of mass following, we went down into the decorated gymnasium. The theme tonight was "I love the 80's. I expected a formal dance, as the name already foreshadowed. All this thing was like "formal dance" more like a disco or the German carnival even if the dance style is a bit different, but was very similar.

I spent the evening then mainly dancing with Gina. So much "rest" was not even then remains, because the three hours flew by. But that's always when you have lots of fun.

9 / 11 - The 11th September 2001

Yesterday was the 11th September 2008 or 9 / 11. Seven years after the horrific terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washinton DC I still see tears und Trauer in den Augen der Menschen hier, vor allem in denen meiner Gastmutter. Saemtliche Fahnen und Flaggen waren auf Halbmast, Gedenkminuten im ganzen Land und viele Errinnerungen die hochkommen, wenn man mit den Leuten darueber spricht. "Das schrecklichste ist, dass es so ein schoener Tag war...", hoere ich meine Gastmutter immer noch sagen.

Sicher war der 11. September ein schrecklicher Tag fuer die ganze Welt ganz besonders aber fuer die Amerikaner. Es geht einem sehr nahe, wenn man im Geschichtsunterricht ausfuerlich ueber das Szenario spricht und bewegende Dokumentationsfilme dazu sieht.

Nie zu vor ist mir so wahrhaft bewusst geworden (und es ist immerhin sieben Jahre her), was an jenem Dienstag um 8:46 Uhr Ortszeit in New York and Washingtion happened.

daru decisive factor is probably the fact that the third entfuerte aircraft target on the White House (Flight 93) directly over my house here in North Canton was flying before it crashed in Pannsylvania. The scheduled destination of the machine was the same airport where I landed.

Here in the U.S. is 9 / 11 is still not a long story but pure reality ...

The terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001, a series of suicide attacks on civilian and military emblematic buildings in the United States. They were 19 members of the Islamist terrorist group al-Qaidaausgeführt. The five or even four attackers kidnapped about 9:30 between 8.10 and clock clock time (EDT), four commercial aircraft on domestic flights, two of which deflected into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and one into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The abbreviations used in the United States "9 / 11" (nine-eleven) for the "September 11 attacks" is reminiscent of the emergency number in the U.S. with the notation 911 (nine-one-one). Often the attacks are too short, "the 11 September "called.
