„Ein Freund zu Gast in der Welt“ - Unter diesem Motto stand mein gesamtes Austauschjahr in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika im Rahmen des Parlamentarischen Patenschaftsprogramm 2008/09 des Deutschen Bundestages. Mit diesem Leitmotiv habe ich mich bereits für das Stipendium beworben und es hat mich seitdem durchweg begleitet. Auch nachdem ich wieder in Deutschland bin, lebt der Kern dieses Satzes darin weiter, dass ich die vielen positiven Erfahrungen die ich in der Welt gemacht habe wieder mit in meine Heimat nehmen konnte und als der „Freund“ wieder zurückgekommen bin, der am 7. August 2008 ins Land der unbegrenzten Möglichkeiten aufgebrochen ist.
Angefangen hat mein kleines Abenteuer bereits week-long seminar on the preparation of experiment e. V. in May 2008 in Bad Bevensen. There I first met the young people who would only take a few months later, join me in this adventure to himself. We combined the same fears, expectations, goals and aspirations. Gemeinsam mit meinen Gasteltern Pamela und Paul und deren beiden Söhnen Patrick und Christopher wurde ich ein vollständiger Teil des Familienlebens.
Sehr viel ist seitdem in meinem Leben geschehen. Ich habe unzählige neue Freunde und Bekannte kennengelernt, bin viel mit meiner Gastfamilie in den USA gereist, aber bin mir vor allem persönlich sehr viel näher gekommen und habe viele Werte und Ansichten zu schätzen gelernt, die mir zuvor verschlossen waren.
Besonders geprägt hat mich der US-Präsidentschaftswahlkampf 2008. Mit großem Interesse habe ich das Rennen der beiden Kandidaten Barack Obama und John McCain um das mächtigste Amt der Welt hautnah verfolgt. Besonders in diesem Zusammenhang bekam ich die Gelegenheit Deutschland zu repräsentieren und Parallelen aber auch Gegensätze in Politik und Gesellschaft herauszustellen. Ich selber war als Wahlhelfer eine kurze Zeit für Barack Obama ehrenamtlich tätig. Die Wahlen waren neben der Finanzkrise das wohl bedeutendste Thema während meinem gesamten Auslandsjahr. Anders als in Deutschland konnte ich erfreulicher Weise ein deutlich vermehrtes Interesse an Politik unter den Jugendlichen feststellen. Auch hier war es mit besonders wichtig, voll und ganz mit in die Diskussionen einzusteigen und die Bundesrepublik zu vertreten. Denn dieser Wahlkampf war bedingt durch die Krise nicht nur wichtig für die USA selber, sondern auch für die restliche Welt.
Vor allem in der Schule, aber auch außerhalb in der Kirche und Kommune, wurde ich ununterbrochen mit interessierten „Deutschland-Fragen“ überhäuft. Vieles was für die Deutschen beziehungsweise die Europäer selbstverständlich ist, wird von den meisten Amerikanern mit Staunen und Bewundern entgegenommen. Ingesamt 20 Schueler und Schuelerinnen aus ueber zehn Nationen und fast alle Kontinente waren vertreten (die Amerikaner selbst deutlich in der Unterzahl). Demzufolge war die Stimmung sehr international. Die Brasilianer und Spanier sorgten fuer die Feurigkeit, die Afrikaner trugen durch ihre Gelassenheit bei, die Asians brought us laugh and the rest was just with.

Rosen hingen von den Waenden und Decken in der Cafeteria im Schulgebaeude, die sich in dieser Nacht zur Discoflaeche verwandelt hatte.

An Neujahr, ein paar Minuten nach Mitternacht, hatte Rachel mich gefragt, ob ich sie zum Ball begleiten wuerde. Den Silvesterabend hatten wir bei Margaux, einer Austauschschuelerin aus Belgien verbracht - auf europaeische Weise natuerlich.

Kurz nach Weihnachten neigte sich dann auch das Jahr 2008 dem Ende zu. Dieses Jahr war das beste meines Lebens - bis jetzt! Fuer mich ist das ein Anlass, nocheinmal zurueckzublicken, was alles geschehen ist in den letzen 12 Monaten:

Januar - Die offizielle Bestaetigung war in der Post, dass ich von Wilhelm Josef Sebastian, MdB (CDU) nominiert worden bin, fuer ein Jahr als junger Botschafter fuer Deutschland im Rahmen des Parlamentarischen Patenschaftsprogramm 2008/2009 des Deutschen Bundestag und des US-Kongress in den USA zu leben.

Juli - Die letzten Vorbereitung haben begonnen. Dazu gehoerten auch die ersten Abschiede. Gegen Ende des Monats, kurz vor meiner Abreise, bin ich mit der katholischen Jugendgruppe Gelsdorf  ins Zeltlager nach Pruem in die Eiffel gefahren. Noch mal ein paar Tage "Urlaub", bevor es dann endgueltig auf in mein Abenteuer ging. Wahrenddessen, hielten mich meine Eltern stuendlich auf dem Laufenden, bezueglich meiner Gastfamilie, die nun endlich feststand. (7 Tage bevor es losging).

August - Endlich war es soweit. DER Monat stand vor der Tuer. MEIN Monat! Bevor es logsging ins Land of opportunity, it was said, however, take leave. Ich machte einen Ausflug auf dem Erie See und gegen Ende war auch schon der erste fomelle Tanzball der Schule - Homecoming. Die Fussballseasion war im vollen Gange. Jeden Tag zwei Stunden Training und mindestens zwei Spiele pro Woche.

Oktober - Fussball neigte sich so langsam dem Ende zu und wir bekamen einen goldenen Oktober. Die Sonner schien jeden Tag und die Temperaturen waren angenehm erfrischend. Ansonsten verging dieser Monat sehr ruhig.

November - A little adventure in my adventure. Over the Thanksgiving holidays I went with my host family in Rhode Iceland, to celebrate the festival. On the way made as a stop in New York City for 24 hours. I got almost every famous tourist spot to face ... Then we drove to Rhode Iceland, where we had the Thanksgiving feast with the whole family. In the morning I met Rachel for the first time in five months. The Friday before we were making on the way back to Ohio, we spent in Boston, MA. All in all, the part very exciting for me.

December - the last months of a memorable year, mostly full nature of of the American Christmas. As in the picture book. 35 guests came to our Christmas party on 25 December.
